Learn Wheel Throwing: If you’ve wanted to learn to use the potter’s wheel, this class is for you. You’ll work at your own pace as you learn to center and make well-formed pottery pieces. No experience is necessary. New glazes, colors, and projects make this a great class for repeat students. Please note that this class is limited to five students so each has access to an electric pottery wheel throughout the class. Emily Shoey will teach one session of this class on Wednesday evenings, April 3 through 24, from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Jack Handshaw will teach a second session on Tuesday mornings, May 7 through 28, from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M.

Pottery by Hand: In this class students will learn how fun and easy it is to express their creativity by hand-building with porcelain clay. You’ll make gorgeous three-dimensional pieces such as a beautiful, functional, and unique colander. New glazes, colors, and projects make this a great opportunity for repeat students. Jack Handshaw will teach two sessions of this class, one on Thursday mornings, April 4 through 25, from 10:00 to 12:00 P.M.; and a second on Thursday evenings, May 23 through June 13, from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M.

Hand-Building Series: This spring the Arts Council will offer a series of one-day clay hand-building workshops taught by Jack Handshaw. In each workshop, students will build their piece(s) out of stoneware clay during class and select a glaze color; Handshaw will dry, bisque-fire, and glaze each piece(s) for pickup at the Arts Education Center at a later date. No experience is necessary for any of the workshops, and students who enroll in all four will receive a 10 percent discount on tuition. In Carved Lantern, you’ll make a gorgeous carved lantern to shed candlelight—great for indoor or outdoor/garden use; this workshop will meet on Tuesday, April 16, from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. In Red Ware Vase, students will make and decorate a vase out of red ware clay—perfect for displaying spring flowers; this workshop will meet on Tuesday, April 30, from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. In Hand-Crafted Bird House, you’ll build a charming home for your feathered friends—or to keep it inside as a unique accent piece; this workshop will meet on Tuesday, May 7, from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. And in Unique Decorated Tile, you’ll hand-craft and decorate a tile suitable for mounting or for use as a coaster or trivet; Handshaw will teach two sessions of this workshop on Tuesday, May 14, one from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M., and another from 4:30 to 6:30 P.M.

Adams County Arts Council announces April cooking classes for adults

Everything You’ve Ever Wanted to Know about Cooking with Tofu: In this two-hour seminar, students will make tempeh stir-fry with a delicious yogurt peanut sauce as they sample a tofu quiche and tofu chocolate pie. You’ll head home with great recipes and tips for cooking with this healthful ingredient. Linda Fauth will teach two sessions of this seminar on Tuesday, April 9—one from 12:00 to 2:00 P.M., and another from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M.

Sweet and Savory Tarts: Students will take their first step toward the conquest of pastry by mastering a versatile all-butter tart dough that is perfect for both sweet and savory tarts. You’ll practice easy hand mixing and shaping techniques, and explore a variety of delicious toppings and fillings. Pomona’s Bakery and Café owner Marc Jalbert will teach this seminar on Monday, April 22, from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M.

Adams County Arts Council announces April glasswork classes for adults

The Adams County Arts Council has scheduled two glasswork classes for adults this April, both of which will be taught by glasswork artist Leah Powell at the Arts Council’s Arts Education Center at 125 South Washington Street in Gettysburg. Custom Drawer Pulls: In this class students will create customized drawer pulls to put the finishing touch on kitchen cabinets or that special piece of furniture. You’ll learn glass cutting and fusing techniques as well as some great design tips. Powell will teach this class on Saturday mornings, April 13 through 27, from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M.

Fused Glass Bowls: In this class students will learn glass cutting and fusing techniques as they design and create a small textured bowl and two larger soup/cereal bowls that are both beautiful and functional. Powell will teach this class on Saturday afternoons, April 13 through 27, from 1:00 to 4:00 P.M.
