(11/3) Mount St. Mary’s University was the gathering spot Saturday for 425 Special Olympics Maryland athletes, including about 40 from Frederick County, in the organization’s final state-level competition of the year.
Athletes competed in soccer team play and individual skills contests, volleyball matches, and bench press and weightlifting contests.
From Frederick County, 27 athletes competed in soccer contests, eight in volleyball and six in powerlifting.
‘‘The competitors are not out there for money, glory or fame," said Patricia Krebs, Special Olympics Maryland president and chief executive officer, in a press release. ‘‘They are simply there for the love of the sport and are grateful for the opportunity to showcase their
talents."
About 200 volunteers, including Mount St. Mary’s students, helped organize the daylong event.
The 2005 Fall Sports Fest marked the end of the fall sports season and 2005 competition year.
The next state competition is the state floor hockey tournament, scheduled for Feb. 4 at the Frederick SportsPlex.
