(2/8) Good things are coming to the Glad Valley Golf Club following its sale to Barricks Quarry in December. Barricks was approached by former owner, Mibong Hong last year about purchasing the property. Hong was looking to exit the business but wanted to find a buyer who would continue to pursue her efforts to make the coarse the very best in Frederick County.
Upon purchasing the course, Barricks leased the course to Kim Jung Hyun, known as ‘June’ by his peers, who had worked under the Hong. Since assuming the mantel of management, Kim has been busy playing catch up on long overdue maintenance and upgrades to the facilities and grounds.
General Manager Donnie Jacobs noted that while the administrative changes may be subtle, it will allow things to run smoothly when the weather warms and the busy season begins. He also expressed excitement for "getting to run things how I’ve always wanted to."
Jacobs has held his position as General Manager and Superintendent through previous ownership, though his role is taking a new shape as he focuses on those changes. Golfers in the Glade Valley area share often on social media about their appreciation for GVGC staff and playing conditions, both of which are being prioritized under new ownership. Mr. Hyun stated that while no changes have been made yet, they have big plans in store for their members.
Initial focus will be on replacing the entire fleet of 77 golf carts, which are scheduled to arrive in late April to early May. The new fleet will be equipped with lithium batteries that are expected to require less maintenance. Jacobs said the current fleet took a beating from the rainy season in 2018 and are now in dire need of replacement. The cost to lease the carts is $120,000 annually, which is up about 25 percent since the last time they purchased carts.
The second priority is for repairs to the irrigation system, which has recently left conditions too wet for early morning frequenters. The repairs should not exceed $50,000 and will include setting up the irrigation to be automatic.
Cosmetic improvements will include painting the offices and replacing furniture for the clubhouse lounge, as well as tree trimming around the property as weather permits.
According to Jacobs, the tree trimming, and outdoor work could take up to five months to complete as they must remove diseased trees as well as those that are already downed or leaning. While it is a larger undertaking, this proactive approach to maintaining the property will help to eliminate the potential for future hazards.
In addition to major renovations to the golf club’s facilities, Hyun also plans to add additional buildings and facilities to support weddings and events services.
The 18-hole course, located between Walkersville and Woodsboro on Glade Valley Road, opened in 1991 and currently has 80 full time members.
XXXXXX, of Barricks, said they look forward to working with Hyun and Jacobs as they pursue their goal of creating a state-of-the-art premier golf course and event facility for Frederick County.
