Charles Clifford Currens of Taneytown,
Maryland was born on October 21, 1843 in Carroll County. He was
Baptized at the Trinity Lutheran Church on November 12th, 1843.
Charles is listed on the 1850 Federal Census at the age of 7
living in Carroll County, and listed on the 1860 Federal Census at
the age of 16 living in Taneytown, Maryland in Carroll County.
Charles served in Company C of the First Potomac
Home Brigade (Cole's Cavalry) of the Union Army during the Civil
War. He was captured in Virginia and was a Prisoner of War at
Andersonville Prison in Georgia. He was later transferred to
Florence, South Carolina.
After the war, he was a saddle maker for 24 years
and served as the Post Master of Taneytown from March 28, 1873 to
December 14, 1885.
On April 14, 1872 he married Amanda Schaffer. They
had seven children.
Sometime near the turn of the Century Charles and
his family moved to Thurmont, Maryland where he died from
Tuberculosis at the age of 70 on January 15, 1914. He is buried in
the Weller Church Cemetery.
