About Bill Meredith ...
Bill writes about a
variety of topics; most have
connections with ecology or natural
history. His primary motive in
writing is as a creative outlet, but he
hopes the column will also heighten the
readers' awareness of the biological
phenomena encountered in everyday life.
Growing up on a small farm formed an
essential part of Bill's character and
marked the beginning of his education.
He attended a two-room elementary
school, and East Fairmont High School.
His graduate education includes a B. A.
in Science Education from Fairmont State
College, a M.S. in Zoology from West
Virginia University, and a Ph. D. in
Ecology from the University of Maryland.
Bill taught biology at
Mount St. Mary's College from 1957 until
his retirement in 1998. His specialties
were ecology and genetics, but he also
taught courses in introductory biology,
zoology, botany and general
science. In addition, he taught writing
in the Freshman Seminar program.
He was Chairman of the Science
Department at The Mount from 1968 to
1977, and was appointed Associate Dean
in 1980. He served as Dean of
Undergraduate Studies from 1981 to 1987,
and in the 1995-96 school year.
Since retiring, Bill's time is
occupied by the grandchildren and
hobbies, including gardening,
woodworking, golf, bird
watching, classical guitar and
the Mount's jazz band.
